Alternative energy is a general term that refers to any source of usable energy intended to replace fossil fuels without the undesired consequences of the replaced fuels. Sometimes called renewable energy, alternative energy is usually considered to be energy derived from the sun and wind.

You should complete an energy reduction and conservation program BEFORE considering the installation of alternative energy systems. You will ALWAYS get a better return for your capital invested in energy conservation!

Your buildings may have the proper orientation for solar panels placed on the roofs of your buildings, or you may have access to high wind energy potential depending on your location. In Western Pennsylvania, solar projects produce the most energy during the warmer summer months, and wind energy is most cost effective during the colder seasons. An ideal renewable energy project may include the installation of both solar panels and a wind generator. Both systems can be set up to feed energy into a bank of storage batteries, or can be directly interfaced with the power grid.

It is unrealistic to assume that most businesses can generate enough power via alternative energy systems to completely eliminate their dependence on the power company for their business's electrical consumption. The cost of sizing a system that can generate enough power for heating and cooling a business would not give the owners a good return on the capital invested in purchasing and installing the equipment. Consider the renewable project as a way to reduce energy consumption when the system is working (sunny days, or windy periods).

Solar hot water heating systems can provide for all or most of your typical hot water requirements, if you have a storage tank sized to meet the needs of your employees and customers. These systems make good economic sense and can save you money (especially if there are local, state or federal financial incentives for installing the equipment).

Applewood Energy has extensive knowledge on all types of alternative energy projects and can provide consulting services, along with an analysis of the costs and benefits of each type of system. Contact us for a quote for our services.
